The outer ring is made of orange raffia, while the inner ring is a strand of my hair. I did this piece because the raffia reminded me so much of my hair (better yet, the comic book "I wish my hair were this thick" version of my hair). Raffia is a fiber made from the raffia palm, and is used in flower arrangements and woven bags and hats. So I was playing with the ideas of comparison of the two unlike, yet organic, things, and by placing them in circles, I brought out some of the symbolism of that shape: wholeness, time, creation, perfection. The concentric circles, at least in my mind, refer to the buddhist symbology: "stages of inner progression and the progressive harmonization of the spirit." Taken as a whole, I suppose the piece could be summed up as a personal reflection - both in the sense that I have reflected a meaning onto the rafia that it was not intended to have, and that I am "reflecting" from the piece on the sense of harmony and peace which I am working toward. The 19" x 13" AP is in the collection of Kathleen Pirozolli. The numbered edition is in the collections of Sonny & Lori Register, Bill & Hazel Register, Cleston & Natalie Spresser, Emily & David Hensen, Laurie Krosney, Elaine Burdge, and Peggy Vetter. |
