  • YEAR OF COMPLETION: 1999
  • DIMENSIONS: panels 48" x 24" each
  • MEDIA: Graphite on Wood Panels with Rusted Metal Necklaces

For some reason, my sister and I have inherited what I call "genetic crap" from our family, especially from our mother's side, and it all hit us when we turned 18. My body started falling apart, and Rissa's emotional health went out the window. So I drew these portraits of us on wood panels, nailed these heavy necklaces around our necks, but left Jordan's off, to be displayed immediately to his right. (Sorry I don't have a picture of it, too.) The necklaces represent the genetic crap, heavy and ever present, that Marissa and I deal with everyday. But Jordan doesn't seem to have these problems yet, either because he's not yet 18 or becuase he's a male, and this crap seems to only affect females. (Although, mom says he seems to have his own brand of genetic crap...) We've yet to find out, but the threat is there, ominous and not too far away. This is also why Jordan is drawn on a lighter wood than the other two, to represent a lightness that he can enjoy for now, and a hope that it will continue.
