The idea for this piece came to me on September 12th, 2001. I knew that I would do a piece of work about the terrorist attacks, and I also knew that alot of artists were going to do very cheezy illustrations or collages as their response. I wanted my piece to address the underlying feelings, not the actual event, so that the piece could become more universal and be applied to more than one thing. So I started thinking of symbols for my emotions. Red is a color of anger, fire, and violence (as well as any sort of passion); the ropes were tied to become "all tied up in knots" to represent the mix of feelings I was experiencing; and the needle pulled it all together as a stabbing object, or something that is useful but could inflict pain. One of the ladies I work with pointed out that the use of two ropes could represent the towers themselves, which I had not thought of. I had simply meant them to add balance to the composition. But if that is the case, the "break" that is noticible in the rope on the right becomes wholy appropriate. This piece is in the collections of Jordan Pope, Steve & Jan Merriman, Todd Behrens & Angela Fortunas, Terri & Joe D'Orsaneo, Vickie Luffman, and Pal Rivers Powell. |
