This piece came about as I was reading about the Four Noble Truths of Buddhism, and I had orgininally planned to do images representing all four. The First Noble Truth is that all of life contains suffering, and since my initial introduction to the Four, I've read enough to find out that this statement is not intended to be a negative thought, as much as it is a statement of fact. Suffering is here, it's unavoidable in most of our daily lives, but the rest of the Truths show one how to grow past it. But besides that, I think I've created a more encompasing representation of the concept of suffering: the knot, the stabbing pain, and the red of blood and anger, I may still do the rest of the series (The Causes of Suffering, The End of Suffering, and The Path to the End of Suffering), but for now, I think this piece stands on it own, with or without the background of where the idea originated. |
