This piece starts, as the title suggests, from the idea of how technology relates to identity. However, each image seems to have its own "theme." For example, the purple piece with its repetition of the circle seems to speak of spirituality, the red of unrequitted love, the white of motherhood, and the silver of sexuality. Each image was done intuitively and so each meaning evolved on its own. Another interesting thing about the piece is the contrast of the hard metal to the softness of the fabrics. Most of them are satins or silky type materials, so their texture creates a conflict with the rusted metal. It's like the preciousness is trying either to cover or to embrace the rot. They also seem to relate to some kind of bondage. I think this is probably a subconscious result of a phrase from Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time series (I had been listening to the unabridged audio of the series at the time): "Duty is heavier than a mountain, death as light as a feather." Within the context of the books, the phrase becomes an ominous mantra, however, it seems to apply to everyone's lives at some time. |
